Web > 2.0

During a conversation with Mike and Ryan the other day about Google’s new addition of a Powerpoint like presentation web app to their online office suite, the topic of “web 3.0″ came up. I am interested in this because I have heard some talk about web “versions” greater than 2.0 in meetings around the RAD Lab here at UC Berkeley. I was not surprised to find that Wikipedia has a nontrivial entry on web 3.0. While I think that the definition of web 3.0 is ultimately going to be vague and hand wavy… I guess for now I’m going to go with defining 3.0 as a move to a portable internet, i.e. web 2.0 + cellphones = web 3.0. The iphone is a member of the first graduating class of web 3.0, the rumored gphone will probably join the 3.0 family as well.

It really does seem with the advent of tablet pcs (which never really took off but is slowly creeping along still) and now portable, tiny, flash drives that you can access with a screen you can touch…. we’re moving to a mobile web. Access from anywhere with a cell tower in range. No more cords. Business on the move. There are even “wireless power solutions” approaching the market.

From what I hear from the higher-ups, Nokia is talking internet on your phone faster than your dsl at home. In fact, the execs are already using it, they’re blazing by on the new network with the whole pipeline directed to a handful of users!
